May/June ‘24: Aldon Lynn Nielsen

Welcome to third issue of the Philly Poetry Chapbook Review! I’m very pleased with the reviews published and poems featured in our first two issues. While all of that content remains available, I made the decision to put out a somewhat abbreviated third issue to get ahead in my publishing schedule. There will be no new reviews in this issue, and only two great chapbook poems— we were pleased to feature Christine Kitano’s “Disguise” on our front during May and Stephanie Kirby’s “Like a Honeypot” in currently up for June. I’ve also added a Featured Poem Archive to the Journal menu.

Contributors C.M. Crockford, Drishya, and myself are working on reviews for our fourth issue and beyond, but our May/June issue only has one editorial feature— the first in what I hope to be a series of long interviews with veteran poets (defined here as poets who have been publishing/teaching for at least two decades). I interviewed poet, professor, and scholar Aldon Lynn Nielsen— whose chapbook Sufferhead was published by Bottlecap Press in 2022— by email during February and March of this year. In our collaborative Q & A piece inspired by the form of Nielsen’s book with E. Ethelbert Miller, MemeWars, the poet-scholar weaves in literary history and friendly anecdote as he talks about his chapbook, his ideas about what makes good poetry, and pays tribute to poets (and friends) who’ve recently passed away.

Another new feature beginning with this issue is that we are separating chapbooks from full-length poetry collections in our new books posts. Since I often have trouble getting information about chapbooks in advance of publication, they will now be published in a single post during the first week of each month, showing the previous month’s releases. You can see the first of these in our May chapbooks post here.

I’m happy with the pace at which PCR is growing, but I’m always looking for more contributors. If you or someone you know is interested in interviewing poetry chapbook authors or reviewing recently published chapbooks, please check out our submission guidelines.

Thank you for reading and take care,
Aiden Hunt
Editor/Creator

P.S.- If you’ve noticed problems with the “Contents” accordion at the bottom of posts not being updated, I’m aware of it. It’s a WordPress issue that I’m hoping will be fixed soon.
