About the Poem
This poem began as a quick stream-of-consciousness, but soon broke into themes I find myself constantly returning to: the classic Arab tragedy of Laila and Majnoon, the nature of choice in religion, and my personal relationship with the Arabic language. As a Muslim, I don’t know much Arabic, but I still pray and read the Qur’an in Arabic. I find that strange divide between myself and the language to be confounding, yet inexhaustible to write about.
